Rescuing a Half-Printed Model: How I Resumed After Running Out of Filament

The nightmare: filament ran out mid-print

I was printing a model of an office worker figurine on my Bambu Lab A1 Mini. Everything was going smoothly — the layers were stacking up nicely, the details were crisp. Then, at about 50% done (only the lower half of the body was finished), the extruder started clicking. The filament spool was empty.

The good news: I had leftover filament

Fortunately, I had some leftover PLA filament from previous prints. Not a full spool, but enough to potentially finish the model. The question was: can the Bambu Lab A1 Mini resume a print after the filament has run out and been replaced?

Resuming the print on Bambu Lab A1 Mini

Here is what I did:

1. Loaded the new filament spool into the printer

2. Used the resume feature in Bambu Studio — the printer remembers exactly where it stopped

3. The A1 Mini re-heated the nozzle, extruded a little to prime the new filament, and continued right from where it left off

The result

It worked! The A1 Mini successfully resumed the print and completed the model. There was a slight visible seam at the point where the filament was swapped, but overall the result was surprisingly good. The upper half of the office worker model printed cleanly, and the final figurine looked great.

Lessons learned

1. Always keep spare filament handy — even partial spools can save your print

2. Bambu Lab A1 Mini can resume prints after filament swap — this is a lifesaver

3. The visible seam is minimal and acceptable for most prints. If you need a perfect finish, you can sand or paint that section

4. Check filament estimate in Bambu Studio before starting long prints — but even if you forget, the resume feature has your back

Tips for filament swap resume

1. Use the same filament type (PLA to PLA, not PLA to PETG) for best adhesion

2. Try to match the color if the seam will be visible

3. Make sure the nozzle is clean before resuming — purge old filament if needed

4. If you have AMS Lite, the printer can auto-switch spools when one runs out — no manual swap needed

Final thoughts

Running out of filament is not the end of the world. The Bambu Lab A1 Mini makes it easy to resume prints, and with a little care, the results can be almost seamless. This experience made me appreciate the A1 Mini even more — it is forgiving, reliable, and beginner-friendly.
